Course Description
This two-part lecture and discussion series provides a practical framework for understanding the built environment through its dominant spatial patterns and structural systems.
Rather than relying on the traditional “five types of construction,” participants learn how buildings actually behave—turning complexity into actionable fireground insights.
Drawing from real fireground experience, these classes blend architectural concepts with firefighting practice to help firefighters:
Better interpret buildings
Anticipate hazards
Make informed decisions under pressure

In Memory of Firefighter Ty Voth
We honor Firefighter Ty Voth for making the ultimate sacrifice for his community. Ty tragically fell in the line of duty while courageously battling a structure fire on August 1st, 2024. As a five-year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department, Ty was a shining example of selflessness, dedication, and bravery. He consistently put others before himself, embodying the true spirit of service.
His loss is deeply felt by his brothers and sisters in the fire service, as well as the entire Wichita community.
Rest Easy, Brother. We Will Take It from Here.
“Knowledge is power when it is shared freely; when it is lorded and hoarded it is divisive and destructive.”
